Highlights From Zenoot’s Article ‘The Foundation for Success’

Zenoot, the home of UK manufacturing content, recently published an article in partnership with the team at CQM Training & Consultancy – ‘Foundation for success – the secret to creating a future-ready manufacturing workforce’. Here are a few of the article’s highlights:

The top three barriers to barriers to growth in manufacturing businesses are all people-related (skills shortages, recruitment and retention), so it makes sense that over half of manufacturers plan to invest more in their workforce in the next year.

At CQM, we believe that workplace development needs to be aligned with business goals to help manufacturers on their journey to operational excellence.

Why Quick Fixes Aren’t a Long-Term Solution

Many manufacturing businesses focus on addressing immediate needs or skills gaps without really considering the needs of individuals and the wider business, with specific training courses that might not be effective. Although this can solve the problem short-term, it doesn’t give employees the core skills needed to problem-solve and troubleshoot future issues.

Empowering employees with broader core skills, such as continuous improvement, Lean Six Sigma and change management, is the best way to future-proof your workforce.

“Equipping employees with problem-solving techniques can be applied to any process, in any area. If you teach someone how to use Microsoft Excel, they’re limited to Excel. But if you teach someone how to visualise data and solve problems, they can tackle issues anywhere.”

– Andy Cheshire, Managing Director, CQM Training & Consultancy

Britvic Case Study

In the past, Britvic approached the team at CQM with a problem – they were facing operational challenges and needed a focused and scalable approach to continuous improvement. The solution? A tailored Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training programme that was centred around real-world projects.

Training needs to be effective in terms of solving today’s problems but strategically aligned to navigate future business challenges too.

Training shouldn’t be a tick-box exercise or quick-fix solution. It should empower individuals to work collaboratively, embrace change and be able to embed their skills in their day-to-day roles.

This supports the development and retention of key staff, which in turn helps to reduce the skills gap that exists within manufacturing. This is something we are incredibly passionate about at CQM T&C and forms the basis of all our training programmes.
