SMED - Changeover Reduction

Training Summary – SMED

Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) is a lean manufacturing technique developed by Shigeo Shingo to dramatically reduce the time and resource it takes to changeover a machine or production line from one product to another.

The primary goal of SMED is to enable a more flexible and responsive manufacturing process, allowing for shorter production runs, decreased downtime and reducing inventory levels, which can significantly enhance overall efficiency and competitiveness.

Our professional, quality training, expertly delivered with insightful context, builds a solid foundation of knowledge needed to understand the various topics, techniques and tools.

Rather than “Death by PowerPoint” or skimming through material in an effort to lightly cover the most ground in the quickest time, our well-balanced training is interactive, engaging and thought provoking. The SMED training will involve lots of practical exercises and will go through an actual changeover to apply the techniques directly.

SMED – Changeover Reduction Course Content

For this Two Day SMED training course you will cover a broad range of topics and our expert development coaches will provide you with the key knowledge and understanding of basic lean principles. The key modules of the Lean Awareness course cover;

  • Why reduce changeover time?
  • What should you aim for on changeover – number/time
  • History and concepts of changeover reduction
  • Measurement in changeover reduction
  • Understanding the steps of changeover reduction
  • Team roles in changeover reduction
  • Collecting data: the plan
  • Collecting data: actual
  • Analysing the data: internal and external elements
  • Trialling solutions
  • Optimising external tasks
  • Workplace organisation
  • Locking in the solution: standard work and visualisation
  • Agreeing future actions for your organisation

You will work on a practical changeover reduction during the day, working systematically through the steps and measuring the improvement.

Undertaking this course works fantastically well with our other Lean Six Sigma training programmes.

Course Benefits

Enhanced Efficiency: Effective training ensures that employees understand and can effectively implement SMED techniques, leading to quicker changeovers and less downtime.

Cost Reduction: By minimising changeover times, organisations can reduce waste, lower inventory costs, and increase machine capital utilisation, which translates into cost savings.

Improved Quality: Consistent and efficient changeovers help maintain product quality by reducing the chances of errors during the setup process.

Employee Empowerment: Training empowers employees to identify and eliminate inefficiencies in the changeover process, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Hands-On Learning: Learners gain practical experience through hands-on exercises and real-world simulations within their working environment, enhancing their ability to apply SMED techniques effectively.

Customisable Content: Our training can be tailored to address the specific needs and challenges of different manufacturing environments.

Sustainable Results: By fostering a deep understanding of SMED changeover reduction principles, this training helps ensure long-term improvements in operational efficiency and overall productivity.

    Tailored SMED Programmes

Our tailored training adopts on-site face to face training and benefits most by being more bespoke and relevant to a particular organisation and its needs. It is typically delivered over two days, to allow for this but also incorporate a more practical based approach.

Our training programme will speak to the requirements of both the organisation and the specific group of learners. Training Programmes can be combined too, creating a truly adaptable and bespoke business solution.

Ideal for larger groups (usually six or more) of learners from a particular organisation, whether on the same site or across multiple different sites.

    SMED – who’s it for?

Production Managers: To oversee and implement changeover improvements across production lines.

Machine Operator & Cell Leaders: To perform quick and efficient changeovers and identify areas for improvement.

Maintenance Personnel: To support and facilitate the rapid setup and adjustment of equipment.

Quality Control Staff: To ensure that product quality is maintained during and after changeovers.

Lean Manufacturing Practitioners: To integrate SMED techniques into broader lean initiatives.

Cross-Functional Teams: To enhance overall process efficiency through collaborative efforts.

By investing in SMED training, manufacturers can significantly enhance their operational capabilities, leading to a more agile, cost-effective, and competitive production environment.
